Karen Smith, Playleader

Since leaving school it has always been my wish to work with children, so in 1996 I completed a Diploma of Nursery Nursing (NNEB) at Stroud College (a Level 3 qualification).  Since then I have enjoyed developing
years of experience whilst working as a Deputy Manager at a Nursery and as a Nanny for ten years for a few families, whom I still keep in touch with.  During this time I also had my own child who was a pupil at Gastrells School, but in 2015 moved up to Thomas Keble Secondary School. I then gained six years experience, working with the Early Years Foundation Stage at a playgroup in Tetbury, before joining Rodborough Playgroup in 2014. I am very pleased to now be the Playleader,
I am also the SENCO in our setting and very proud to say we are a inclusive setting, over the years my experience has included working with mixed abilities and children with additional needs and feel very passionate about my role to support children with extra needs.

I have been a local childminder for the last 10 years which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I’ve looked after approximately 20 children a week and worked for over 20 families. The children ranged from 9 months old to 11. I decided I would like a new challenge and look forward to meeting everybody at Rodborough Playgroup. I have a level 3 qualification in childcare from Cache and have undertaken training in S.E.N., Letters and Sounds and Inclusion. I have 3 grown up children who are 19, 21 and 23 and my favourite free-time activity is going camping!

I have experience in both mainstream and special educational needs schools and have gained my NVQ levels 2 and 3 in child care and education as well as hairdressing. My son who is now at primary school used to attend Rodborough Playgroup and loved it!

Since joining Rodborough Playgroup in 2012 I have attended SENCO training as well as many additional courses.

In my spare time I help out at NCT sales and enjoy socialising with friends.

I grew up in Rodborough and my son who is now at school attended Rodborough Playgroup until 2014. I have a level 3 qualification and have worked as a childminder for 5 years. I also worked for 7 years at Cotswold Chine School with children who had behavioural needs. I started working at Rodborough Playgroup in June 2013.

I have worked at Rodborough Playgroup since 2015 and have recently passed my Level 3 Early Years Practitioner Diploma. Myself and my family moved from Scotland to Stroud 6 years ago and my son attended Rodborough Playgroup. The more I helped with parent duties the more I knew that I was ready for a career change to follow my passion for children's education. It is thanks to the staff, parents and community who have been so supportive and welcoming that I now see Stroud as my home.
